Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies are looking for a man suspected of attacking a woman who was exercising on a street in the Tarpon Woods subdivision last Wednesday evening.

The 49-year-old woman told detectives that she was running on Brian Road South and had slowed down to a walk when a man came from behind her, put his left arm around her and pulled her down to the ground, then touched her inappropriately, according to Sheriff's Office spokesperson Cecilia Barreda.

The attack happened Sept. 26 around 8:30 p.m. on the residential road, which is lined with houses and is located off Tarpon Woods Boulevard.

Barreda says the woman screamed when it happened, then something spooked the attacker and he took off running.

A motorist who saw the woman yelling for help, stopped to assist her and drove her home in his vehicle.

Deputies brought K-9s to search the area, but the suspect was not found.

As for Tarpon Woods residents who might be concerned for their safety as a result of the attack, Barreda has the following recommendation: "As always, be aware of your surroundings. We need time to investigate the case and see what we have," she said.

Detectives do have a description of the suspect. The woman said she saw the back of the man as he ran away from her. She provided this description-

  • 17 to 30 years old
  • 5-foot-10
  • 140 pounds
  • Light brown, curly hair that was just below his ears
  • The suspect was not wearing a shirt.
  • The suspect wore black tennis shoes.

If you have information that can help investigators, call (727) 582-6200 and ask for Detective Jeff Capra.
