Teachers To Benefit From Brooker Creek, UF Training

Brooker Creek will join forces with the University of Florida to offer a free opportunity to area teachers later this month.

A few spots in the Enrichment Summit, which is set to take place at Brooker Creek from July 22-26, need to be filled by local teachers.

The summit is being brought to East Lake by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and Extension Service as well as St. Petersburg College.

The free, weeklong workshop is designed for pre-service elementary education students and elementary teachers with tunnel vision for environmental education.

According to Brooker Creek, the opportunity will offer participants the chance to learn ways of teaching how to conserve the environment using materials from Project Learning Tree, Project Wet, Project Wild and 4-H.

The five-day camp will focus on a different topic each day with an expert in the field leading the discussion. Class begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 3:30 p.m. and will be held at the preserve.

The agenda is as follows:

  • Monday, July 22: Project Learning Tree
  • Tuesday, July 23: Plant Connections
  • Wednesday, July 24: Project WET
  • Thursday, July 25: Creating a School Garden
  • Friday, July 26: Project WILD and Graduation
On the final day of the training, participants will develop a plan for using the tools they learned throughout the week. A certificate of completion will also be awarded to each person.
