Palm Harbor Man Wins Hemingway Look-a-Like Contest

Who looks the most like iconic American author Ernest Hemingway?

This year it happens to be a white-bearded man from Palm Harbor.

Stephen Terry, 56, of Palm Harbor was crowned "Papa 2013" in the annual Ernest "Papa" Hemingway Look-a-Like contest Saturday night July 20, in Key West.

"It was quite a surprise. I thought one of my other friends was going to win," Terry told East Lake Patch Sunday by telephone from Key West.

Terry, who is a software developer at Raymond James in St. Petersburg, says it was the seventh year he's participated in the competition. Previously, he's made the semi-finals and the finals. But, don't look for him to be crowned "Papa" again next year.

"You only get to win once," he said.

Terry said he does not remember much about his big win, it all happened so fast.

"I hadn't even been drinking and I have very little recollection," he said, chuckling. However, he did manage to get some celebrating in after he won the contest.

"I went out last night and had a nice time," he said.

The 2013 Hemingway Look-a-Like contest was held on the eve of Hemingway's 114th birthday at Sloppy Joe's bar, which Hemingway frequented when he lived in Key West.

The annual contest is part of the Hemingway Days celebration in Key West which honors Hemingway's work as an author and sportsman. As is widely-known, Hemingway loved to fish.

Hemingway lived in Key West in the 1930s, according to Wikipedia and wrote "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "To Have and Have Not" during his residency there.
