Hair Stylists Enjoy 26-Year Friendship While Working Together

Two stylists at East Lake's Salon Glo have managed to work together for 26 years while also maintaining a cherished friendship.

Take a step inside East Lake's Salon Glo and the first thing you notice is the sleek and relaxing decor.

But there's one thing you may not readily notice that makes this salon different from many others. Two stylists at the salon have managed to work together for 26 years while also maintaining a cherished friendship.

Salon Glo owner Dawn Phillips, of Trinity, and Sue Moore, of Clearwater, have been cutting and styling hair alongside each other since the 1980s and they wouldn't have it any other way.

The women began working together in 1986 at the MLD3 Salon on 580 in the Clearwater-Dunedin area. They moved with the salon when it relocated to McMullen Booth Road. After that, the pair styled and cut hair at Hair Energy on U.S. 19 in Palm Harbor.

Now, the gal pals are snipping, coloring and styling hair at Salon Glo, which opened in the East Lake Woodlands Executive Park in September 2012.

Through the years, the friends have helped each other in the salon and outside of it.

"I can remember doing my first color, and I had to run to Sue to ask for help on how to mix the color," said Phillips.

They've supported each other during the deaths of loved ones and pets and through boyfriends, weddings, break-ups and all the other emotional events that life brings.

"I like her loyalty. I know I can call her for anything. I know she's always there for me," said Moore.

"I know Sue would have my back and she would be there for me. I respect Sue. She's a good person to have in my life. She's good people," said Phillips.

The pair have shared many laughs together at work and some hair disasters, too.

They recalled a failed effort to fix a woman's hair. Years ago, a client walked into the salon with her head wrapped in a towel. When she took the towel off, her hair was clumped into a knot the size of a Nerf ball. The client had long, fine hair and had braided it and used lots of hair spray on it, but never took it out of the braid whenever she showered.

"It was a disaster," said Phillips.

"She had went to another salon and they had put lighter fluid on to try to break up the hair spray, but all it did was eat it and matt it up. Then she went to another place and they tried putting stuff on it and that made it more matted."

Phillips and Moore tried to untangle the knotted mess and had all the other stylists at the salon give it a try, too.

"We worked on her for hours, but there was no fixing it," Moore laughed.
