Eagle Eye News Run By East Lake Students

The 2013-2014 school year will mark the program's 10th anniversary.

Run almost entirely by East Lake High School students, Eagle Eye News is the school's in-house news service and will hit its 10th birthday this coming school year.

Eagle Eye News started in 2003 with founding producer Miles Doran and founding sponsor Pat Cunningham, according to the Eagle Eye website.

Although the organization was founded in 2003, the first live broadcast didn't take place until 2006.

The broadcasts run daily, four days a week. Wednesdays are skipped due to the shortened school day put in place by Pinellas County Schools.

Broadcasts are produced almost completely by East Lake High School students, but with the help of television production teacher Shawn Anderson, the team is supervised and able to learn while having fun.

According to the Eagle Eye News website, the team of students is rotated weekly. Each team has a producer, a director, two anchors, two cameramen, a production assistant, a floor director, an audio technician, a teleprompter technician and a graphics technician.

During the school year, the Eagle Eye News team takes tips from the community to help mold the broadcasts and features. Email tips are sent to teacher Shawn Anderson for review before being passed down to the team for coverage.

The students cover local news ranging from sports to entertainment. Prom 2012 is one of the last archived broadcasts from last school year while and FCAT outrage and Oprah made headlines on the Eagle Eye News website.

Funded by a number of sources, including the library media department, private donations and WTSP Channel 10, Eagle Eye News stays relevant and on the brink of technology.
