East Lake High Welcomes New Golf Coach

The new coach is also a teacher at the high school.

Although school hasn't started, East Lake High's new golf coach Matthew Kopp said the competition is stiff.

During summer trainings, Kopp said he already has more than enough talent to fill the 12 available spots on the team.

Kopp, 43, is coming into a legacy that never seems to disappoint. Last season the team had an impressive record last season, earning second in the district and fourth in the region.

However, the team may take a hit after losing six star seniors to graduation.

"I have a lot of faith in this team already," Kopp said.

Kopp works in the language arts department at East Lake High School and said he has always been into athletics.

He has coached cross country, golf and track throughout his career as an educator, which is at ten years and going strong.

Kopp has been a teacher in Pinellas County for seven years, but 2013 marks his fifth at East Lake High School.

Although he said he doesn't have much of a resume as a player on the course, Kopp said the athletes at East Lake High will not disappoint.

"They are so much more advanced than any kids I've ever seen at this age," Kopp said.

Kopp's goal for the season is to get to regionals. He said he doesn't think it will be a problem.

"We should have a very good team," Kopp said. "I think we'll probably dominate this year."
