Local High School Band Marches Toward Macy's Parade

With building anticipation and a strict timeline of requirements, the Tarpon Springs High School Marching Band is in a very real race against time.

Since the announcement of Tarpon High's invitation to the 2013 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in May of 2012, students, parents and teachers have been working together to make the dream a reality.

Co-President of the Tarpon Springs Band Boosters, Stefanie Markham told Patch, "we are all very excited about this year and hope to have a lot of community support."

Markham said the band takes another step toward the parade on a daily basis, from fundraisers to planning and practice, practice, practice.

When school starts, the band will take part in practices two periods per day in addition to the regularly scheduled Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday practices.

Although the trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, "the invitation also represents a huge financial obstacle for our families," according to the March for Macy's website.

Crescent Oaks Country Club will host a golf tournament in September to benefit the band while the March for Macy's page is the quickest way for folks to donate.

An ongoing fundraiser for the band is through Brighton Collectibles at Citrus Park Mall. They are donating 50 percent of the proceeds from sales or their independence charm holder bracelet and their Americana ID tag bracelet to the Tarpon Springs High Marching Band.

Tarponites can donate right here, right now by going straight to the band's donation page.
