Renter Insurance

My wife and I are renting as we sell our previous home.  I know that as part of rental agreements, the landlord bears some responsibility to fix some of the problems in the house.  I am wondering how essential it is to get rental insurance?  Doesn't a rental agreement possess insured issues?
